I am happy to announce that the planning for Dog Hill's Summer Fun show is now completed. So here are some teasers: There will be music by Wilson Pickett, Professor Longhair, Eddie Cochran, The Yardbirds, and many, many more.
Tune in at nine, it should be a good one!
-Peter Berris
P.s. This is also my last episode for the semester.
Although I am still in the process of planning out this week's show, there are two things that I wanted to share about it:
1) It is my last program of the semester.
2) It is also my third-annual summer fun episode! I will post an update soon with a few teasers about who I'll feature...
For the penultimate episode of the season, Dog Hill will be returning to more standard programming after last week's personal gremlins. This week's episode will be a really rocking edition of Dog Hill featuring music by Robert Randolph, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Charles Bradley, Otis Redding, and many more...
There will be a couple of sets in particular that will be perfect for guitar fans in particular...
There is good news and bad news. The good news is that there WILL be a dog hill episode tonight. The bad news is that my computer is off for repair, which means I temporarily do not have access to my music library. As a result, I will be playing songs on CDs that I find at WRUR. This means I have no idea what I will be playing, but it will be an adventure.
Hope you join me, and if not, Dog Hill should be back to normal next week,
I have a fun show planned out for tonight with lots of Blues & R&B. Musicians will include James Hunter (who is playing tonight in Rochester), The Coasters, Percy Sledge, Muddy Waters, and more!
This week will be a very special episode of Dog Hill, a tribute to many of the musical greats who have passed away in the last year or two. Rather than a sad list, I hope to make the show a celebration of the musical legacy that each of these artists have left behind...
To do so, I have arranged songs by the artists into one long set, that will be about 35 minutes without a talk break. Although this is not usual radio protocol, I am hoping that the songs will form some kind of narrative tribute, without me interrupting. After that first set, I will switch over to a few classic songs that are about the power of music itself.
To make it easier to follow along with that first continuous set, I will have the playlist (including opening instrumental and the starting set) uploaded in advance of the show. Feel free to follow along!
I hope you tune in at nine on Tuesday. This show has been a long time coming,
Tune in tonight for a mostly acoustic episode (everything has an acoustic feel, but some instruments may be electrified). This should be a particularly good program for fans of classic country, folk, blues, and acoustic rock. I will be playing songs by Leadbelly, Bono, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and others.
Sorry I forgot to mention this sooner, but it actually slipped my mind! Due to Spring Break there will be no Dog Hill tonight. I was unable to pre-record a program, and I guess I can't do one from a few states away!!
I will return for the 20th however!
Thanks, and sorry for any inconvenience,
-Peter Berris
I just wanted to remind you that I'll be on air as usual, from 9-10 tonight (Tuesday, March 6th)! Tonight's program will be a mix of Blues, R&B, and Rock and Roll.
In honor of Black History Month, which is fast drawing to a close, I have a special episode planned for tonight. I will be playing Black protest and empowerment songs from the 1950s, '60s, and '70s. This is not intended to be a comprehensive list, but rather a brief sample of the music that accompanied (and often fueled) the Civil Rights Movement. It is all great music, and I think the messages remain poignant and inspirational.
There will be songs by John Lee Hooker, Syl Johnson, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Sam & Dave, and many more.
Tonight's episode is what I consider the quintessential Dog Hill mix. Although I would classify it as a classic rock episode, it is almost entirely made up of Blues, R&B, and Country.
Music will include songs by The Byrds, Buck Owens, Otis Rush, Dwight Yoakam, Eddie Floyd, and more.
Dog Hill is back for its 5th season, starting tomorrow (2-14-12) at 9 p.m. This means that Dog Hill has a new time slot: Tuesday's from 9-10 at night (regardless of what it says above). This also means that my first episode is on Valentine's Day. To celebrate, I will be doing my second annual Valentine's Day special which will feature classic soul, R&B, and Blues love songs... Don't Miss it!
Other Announcements:
I will be digging into some of my personal vinyl library starting this semester. This means that there will occasionally be snaps and pops in the background, but it will allow me to play songs that I wouldn't otherwise be able to. Some of the material is out of print in newer formats, some I just don't own digitally...
In addition, I hope to introduce two new segments to my show this semester... One is going to be The "Weekly Dog Hill Dating Advice," which will be made up of songs about the path to romance. You'll see. The other is going to be the weekly "Dog Hill Lost Classic/Oddity..." I hope to play one or the other every week, but we'll have to see...
I just wanted to mention again that last week's episode of Dog Hill was the last for the semester. I plan to return in the Spring semester, and will post updates when I know more! Thank you to all who listened, I really enjoyed it.
Since it will be about a month or more until my next show, I thought I would take this chance to recommend a few of my favorite Christmas/Holiday Albums as a holdover until then:
1. The Fools: Christmas Toons. This is probably the funniest Christmas album money can buy, and the music is good too.
2. Various Artists: Alligator Stomp (Vol. 4) Cajun Christmas. Perfect for fans of the cajun sound!
3. B.B. King: 20th Century Masters - The Christmas Collection: The Best of B.B. King
4. Shirim Klezmer Orchestra: Klezmer Nutcracker. This is also a fun one.
5. For jazz fans, "A Dave Brubeck Christmas" by the piano legend is lovely...
And of course there are the perennial faves that I figure I don't even need to recommend. A Charlie Brown Christmas by Vince Guaraldi, and Elvis' classics.
For some of my other picks, just take a look at the play list from December 12, above!
Anyway, have a swell holiday season, and I'll be back soon!
I am excited to say that the second annual Dog Hill semi-holiday winter special is tomorrow (Monday 12-12-2011) at 9 p.m. So on to the question that must be dominating your every thought, and interrupting your sleep... Has the holiday opening instrumental been selected yet? Why, yes it has! After a complicated and lengthy vetting process, the instrumental has finally been chosen from a field that included songs by Booker T. & The MG's, The Ventures, and Los Straitjackets. Tune in tomorrow to hear the winner!
However if you are not yet feeling Christmas-y, or don't celebrate Christmas, or don't like it, don't be deterred. Several of the songs are actually winter related, rather than holiday themed. A couple are neither. In addition, even the Christmas selections should be a refreshing break from the eleven songs that most F.M. stations play on endless repeat this time of the year. With all the finals still ahead, I could only handle so much Christmas cheer myself at the moment!
But, if you are all geared up for Christmas, don't be deterred either! It's still a festive mix of blues, R&B, rock, cajun, and a twinge of country.
So tune in tomorrow for a holiday-ish episode that promises to be lean, mean, festive, and fun.
Dog Hill will be returning to its normal schedule this week! That means you should tune in at 9 pm tomorrow (Monday, December 5th). If you're not ready for all the holiday music playing on FM right now, this will be an especially good episode for you. I wont be playing any Christmas tunes, but rather a mix of New Orleans R&B, doo wop, blues, early rock, and some soul. If you like Ray Charles, this should be a really good one for you...
And if you are ready for all the Christmas music playing on FM, I will be doing my annual semi-holiday special on Monday the 12th.
The bad news: I am canceling Dog Hill today (11-28-11) due to post-Thanksgiving mayhem!
The good news: The show will return next week, and hopefully will run without further interruption until the winter recess. Based on my current schedule, the last show for the semester should be on December 12th. So that means that the Dog Hill holiday special is only a couple of weeks away!
Anyway, I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend, and I hope you'll tune in next week...
With Thanksgiving only a few days away, and the leaves off the trees, I thought this would be a good time to plan a show that matches the mood of late autumn. It will be a mostly acoustic program, with quite a bit of folk and classic country, some rock, and some blues. I hope to play songs by Johnny Cash, Lightnin' Hopkins, Bob Dylan, Rose's Pawn Shop, Neil Young, and many others.
Who? Me. And you - hopefully!
What? Dog Hill's 2nd annual Halloween special!
Where? Here! Select a live listening option.
Why? Because if you love blues, R&B, rock, and Halloween, there is no better place to be...
When? 9-10 p.m.
This is my favorite episode to do every year, so I really hope you'll tune in!
My notorious Halloween program will be returning for the second time Monday the 31st, at 9 p.m. I have been informed that the actual issue which has prevented Dog Hill from airing the last two weeks has finally been resolved. So if that's true, and I don't lock myself out of the radio station like last year, it should be a fun episode.
I have condensed the program into one, action packed, and spooky hour. This wont be a novelty show however! Get ready for tunes by artists including, Howlin' Wolf, The Clash, Iggy And the Stooges, The Rolling Stones, Chuck Berry, and many more.
I hope you'll let Dog Hill be the soundtrack to your Halloween!
As your ears may have informed you, Dog Hill is not on air again. The problem has not been resolved, but hopefully will be for next week's annual Halloween show. The appropriate emails have been sent.
Thank you for your continued support,
-Peter Berris
I have received word that the technical difficulties that defeated Dog Hill last week, have been resolved. I hope to play the material I selected last week, tonight. However, the "Listen in Your Browser" option has been problematic, so if it does not work consider trying the "Listen in a Media Player" option.
Thanks, and I hope you'll tune in at 9 p.m.
-Peter Berris
Don't worry, Dog Hill has not gone soft rock! That is just the automated feed filling in due to technical difficulties. Hopefully everything will be sorted out for next week, at which time I hope to play tonight's promised material.
Dog Hill is back tonight after a one week hiatus. It should be returning with force in an R&B drenched episode which will feature music by Wilson Pickett, Percy Sledge, Little Richard and many more. There will also be selections for the rock and blues fans in the audience from Bo Diddley, the Rolling Stones, and others. Hope you'll tune in!
Unfortunately I have to cancel Dog Hill for this coming Monday, the 10th, because I will be gone for Fall break. I will be returning to the air on the 17th however, and I hope you'll join me then.
I just wanted to announce that Dog Hill is back for a fourth season, and will be on from 9-10 p.m. Monday nights. That means the first episode is tonight! If all goes according to plan, it will feature selections by the Animals, Memphis Slim, Roy Orbison, Etta James, and many more.
Anyway, I have obtained a LOT of new music over the course of the summer, so it should be an exciting season for fans of all the genres played on Dog Hill. In addition, stay tuned for updates about new features I hope to bring to the program soon!
So it may be cold and rainy tonight in Rochester, but that wont stop my annual summer fun episode of Dog Hill! Tune in at 9pm for this year's season finale, which will include music by George Harrison, The Ramones, Eddie Floyd, and so many more.
The next show (4-25-11) is going to be the last episode of Dog Hill for the semester. As I mentioned on my previous show, it will be my annual summer fun episode! I know it was just snowing again in Rochester, and it will still only be April, but it just seems like that only makes fun music all the more essential. It should be crammed with lots of good stuff including Rock, Surf, and R&B.
After my week off, Dog Hill will return tonight from 9-10 pm. In honor of the unseasonably warm weather, tonight's episode will feature a splash of summer fun with music by the Beach Boys, some New Orleans R&B staples, and lots of other fun tunes!
Due to a ridiculously obnoxious cold, I am canceling this week's episode of Dog Hill. I expect to be back next Monday however, and I hope you'll tune in then.
In the meantime, since I don't want to go a week without making a music recommendation I suggest the following songs if you don't already have them:
1. Albert King - "Born Under a Bad Sign"
2. Rose's Pawn Shop - "Dancing on the Gallows"
3. Aretha Franklin - "That's Life"
4. Big Bill Broonzy - "Backwater Blues"
5. Imelda May - "Wild About My Lovin"
Tonight's episode will be another that I consider a classic rock show... which means it will feature lots of blues, R&B, and some country! Selections will include music by Wilson Pickett, Sam Cooke, The Rolling Stones and many more.
Tonight's episode of Dog Hill is just a few hours away. Tune in at 9pm for my definition of a classic rock show, which will feature selections by Ray Charles, Johnny Winter, Bo Diddley and many more!
It may be spring break here at the University of Rochester, but it isn't on Dog Hill. The show will be returning to basics in an all new episode this week, featuring music by Johnny Cash, Tom Petty and recent Grammy winner and blues great Pinetop Perkins, among others.
This is just a reminder that tonight's episode is one that I have been planning for some time. It will be comprised of R&B covers of country songs, and will feature selections by Sam Cooke, Booker T and the MG's, James Brown and more. As always, it will be airing from 9-10 p.m.
This week's episode of Dog Hill is back to the usual mix, after the Valentine's Day R&B special, and will feature Rock, Blues, and Soul.
Next week's episode is one that has long been in the works. It is going to be comprised of R&B covers of country songs. It has taken a while to compile, but it should be good!
Dog Hill’s first episode of the Spring Semester is tonight, and new episodes will be streaming every Monday from 9-10 p.m. I hope that you will join me as I celebrate the start of the new season with a Valentines Day themed episode of classic R&B. Selections will include music by Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Al Green, and so many more!
Tonight is the last episode of my program, Dog Hill, for the semester. Tune in at 8:00 for a mix of classic/should-have-been classic, holiday recordings including B.B. King, Otis Redding, Elvis, The Ramones, and many more.
Dog Hill is back for the Fall semester! The first episode is going to be tonight at 8:00 p.m.(October 26th, 2010),and will be on every Tuesday at the same time. There should be plenty of Rock, Blues, R&B, and Old-School Country!
As always, song requests for future shows are welcome. Send them, along with any other comments or questions, to doghillradio@hotmail.com. Or just write them in on this page as a comment.
As one last order of business, I will be doing a special Halloween program from 8:00 to 12:00 p.m. on Saturday the 30th. So if you are looking for a soundtrack to your Halloween eve, I hope you'll join me on the Sting for a mix of my usual genres, with some stand up routines, and even a little classical thrown in.
Tonight was the last episode of Dog Hill for the semester, so I want to thank all of you for listening. I have had a great time, and hope that you enjoyed it too.
If you would like to request a song for an upcoming episode, feel free to write it in at the bottom of this page. Or you could email it to doghillradio@hotmail.com

Hello listeners,
There is good news and bad news.

This Week's Show (4-3-12) A Tribute...
Hello listeners,
This week will be a very special episode of Dog Hill, a tribute to many of the musical greats who have passed away in the last year or two.

Hello Listeners,

Tune it an nine!

The second annual Dog Hill semi-holiday/winter special!!!
Hello listeners,
I am excited to say that the second annual Dog Hill semi-holiday winter special is tomorrow (Monday 12-12-2011) at 9 p.m. So on to the question that must be dominating your every thought, and interrupting your sleep... Second Annual HALLOWEEN SPECIAL!!!! MONDAY!!!! 9 o'clock!
Hello Listeners,
My notorious Halloween program will be returning for the second time Monday the 31st, at 9 p.m.
-Peter Berris
Sorry, gremlins again. Early for Halloween maybe, but hey...
Hello (would-be) listeners,
As your ears may have informed you, Dog Hill is not on air again. The problem has not been resolved, but hopefully will be for next week's annual Halloween show. The appropriate emails have been sent.
Thank you for your continued support,

Dog Hill should be on tonight - 10-24-2011
Hello everyone,
I have received word that the technical difficulties that defeated Dog Hill last week, have been resolved. I hope to play the material I selected last week, tonight. However, the "Listen in Your Browser" option has been problematic, so if it does not work consider trying the "Listen in a Media Player" option.
Thanks, and I hope you'll tune in at 9 p.m.
-Peter Berris
Technical Difficulties...
Don't worry, Dog Hill has not gone soft rock! That is just the automated feed filling in due to technical difficulties. Hopefully everything will be sorted out for next week, at which time I hope to play tonight's promised material.
Updates to follow.

Dog Hill - Weekly Update - 10-17-2011

Hello (prospective) listeners!
Keep the music playing,
-Peter Berris
Final Episode Tonight! Prepare for Summer Fun...
Hello listeners,
So it may be cold and rainy tonight in Rochester, but that wont stop my annual summer fun episode of Dog Hill! Tune in at 9pm for this year's season finale, which will include music by George Harrison, The Ramones, Eddie Floyd, and so many more.
Keep the music playing,
-Peter Berris
Last Episode - Coming Up!
Hello Listeners,
The next show (4-25-11) is going to be the last episode of Dog Hill for the semester. As I mentioned on my previous show, it will be my annual summer fun episode! I know it was just snowing again in Rochester, and it will still only be April, but it just seems like that only makes fun music all the more essential. It should be crammed with lots of good stuff including Rock, Surf, and R&B.
Keep the music playing,

3. Aretha Franklin - "That's Life"
4. Big Bill Broonzy - "Backwater Blues"
